Many job postings clearly state that the organization requires specific post-secondary education or other advanced degrees. However, education is just one aspect that employers look for during the recruitment process.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, some organizations have decided not to hire new graduates at all. There are a number of reasons for this. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adeccousa.com\/articles\/Lack-of-Soft-Skills-Negatively-Impacts-Today's-US-Workforce.html?id=218&amp;url=\/pressroom\/pressreleases\/Pages\/Forms\/AllItems.aspx&amp;templateurl=\/adeccogroup\/News\/press-releases\/Pages\/press-release.aspx\">2013 survey<\/a> \u00a0by Adecco indicated that 59 percent of senior executives do not believe that colleges and universities adequately prepare students for today\u2019s workforce.<\/p>\n<p>These organizations feel that new graduates lack \u201csoft skills\u201d such as communication, creativity, critical thinking and punctuality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve learned that a past history of success and hard work is more important than a degree or a high GPA,\u201d says Bethany Perkins, HR Director at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.softwareadvice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Software Advice<\/a>. \u201cCandidates who have a proven track record of determination, grit and pride in a job well done are a stronger fit for our office culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Software Advice believes that <a href=\"http:\/\/wins.softwareadvice.com\/i-dont-care-about-college-anymore-0314\/\">college graduates don\u2019t always make the best hires<\/a>. So what can newer graduates do in order to get additional experience and to become better prepared for the workplace? And what can organizations do to ensure that the new graduates they hire are better prepared for the work environment? Formal internship programs can provide many benefits to organizations and to those looking to land their first \u2018real\u2019 job.<\/p>\n<h3>Ensuring that New Gen Y Employees are Prepared for the Work Environment<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/business.time.com\/2013\/11\/10\/the-real-reason-new-college-grads-cant-get-hired\/\">Harris Interactive survey of more than 1,000 hiring managers<\/a> revealed that more than 80% of employers believe that completing a formal internship improves an individual\u2019s attractiveness as a candidate.<\/p>\n<p>For organizations that have internship programs, there are a number of things that can be done to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ngenperformance.com\/blog\/gen-y\/internships-making-them-work-with-gen-ys\">ensure that interns are engaged and productive<\/a> at work, such as offering more flexible work schedules and blending work with social activities. Internships are opportunities to show Gen Ys more about your organization\u2019s informal culture. Mentoring programs can also be incredibly successful in helping interns and newer employees understand the expectations of the organization and the ins and outs of everyday life working there.<\/p>\n<p>Successful internships help recent graduates gain real-world knowledge and experience, which makes them much more employable.
